Privacy policy
Effective 2 October 2026
VMG Watch is an Apple Watch app for sailing races and an iPhone app for looking back at the sessions it recorded. It has no account, no server of its own, no analytics and no advertising. We never receive your data.
This policy covers the VMG Watch apps for Apple Watch and iPhone and this website. It says what the apps keep on your devices, what leaves them, and who receives it.
Who we are
The apps and this website are made by Orkestraator OÜ, registry code 12474370, Heldri tee 18, Haabneeme, Viimsi Parish, Harju County 74001, Estonia. Contact: info@orkestraator.ee. Orkestraator OÜ is the controller of any personal data that the apps process under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
What stays on your devices
In Apple Health
The watch app saves each session to Apple Health as a Sailing workout: its GPS route, the race start, the wind the watch used and the forecast it started from, and a summary (average VMG, distance, maximum speed and similar). As in any workout, Apple Watch also measures heart rate and energy burned. The iPhone app reads these sessions back from Health; it writes nothing to Health. Health keeps this data under Apple's own privacy terms, and you control access to it in the Health settings.
On the Apple Watch
- A track log of the GPS positions of your recent sessions, with time, accuracy, speed and course. It holds about the last four hours of sailing; older positions are removed when a new session starts.
- The last wind forecast, with the position it was fetched for, so the watch can reuse it if the network fails on the same water later that day. Each new forecast replaces it.
- A diagnostic journal of how sessions ran — speeds, wind, battery, errors — with no positions in it. Its size is capped and the oldest lines are removed.
- Your settings, such as units, and the rider profile.
These files are used only on the watch. They are not sent anywhere by the app, but like other app data they can be included in your device's backup.
On the iPhone
- A worked-out copy of each session (legs, winds, the route as points), so the app does not have to recompute it. It is excluded from iCloud and computer backups and encrypted while the iPhone is locked. Copies of sessions no longer in Health, or that you delete in the app, are removed.
- Your settings, stars and notes: units, the rider profile, favorite sessions, the notes you write on sessions, the sessions you have deleted from the list, place names, and the spots you have named, each with the position of its center. These stay on the iPhone and in its backup. Notes never go to Health or the watch.
- A diagnostic journal of the app's reads from Health — counts and errors, no positions — excluded from backups and capped in size.
What leaves your devices
| Recipient | What | When and why |
|---|---|---|
| MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute) | Your position, rounded to four decimal places (about 11 m); the app's name and version and our contact address, which MET Norway requires in every request. As with any internet request, your IP address. | Once per session, at the first GPS fix, to get the wind forecast for where you are. If the network fails, the request is repeated every five minutes, at most six more times. MET Norway logs requests; see its terms of service. |
| Apple (Apple Maps) | Up to three points on the water of a session — usually one — to get a place name. The area of the map you are looking at, to load map tiles. | Once per session to name where you sailed, not if you have named a spot nearby. If Apple cannot name it, at most twice more, a day apart; and again after an app update that changes how places are named. Map tiles when you open a session's map. See Apple's privacy policy. |
Between your own devices, the iPhone app sends the watch your rider profile (class, upwind and downwind angles and speeds), and the watch reports back which profile it is using. This goes directly between the two devices through Apple's watch connection and contains no positions. Sessions reach the iPhone only through Apple Health's own sync.
Nothing else is sent anywhere. The apps contain no third-party code, no analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising, and they do not track you.
Why, and on what legal basis
Location and Health data are processed to provide the features you use: live speed and VMG, the recorded route, the wind forecast and the place names (GDPR Article 6(1)(b), and for health data your explicit consent, given through the Health permission sheet, Article 9(2)(a)). You can withdraw that consent at any time by turning off access in the settings below.
Your choices
- Turn Health access on or off at any time: on the iPhone, Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › VMG Watch.
- Location access: on the watch, Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › VMG Watch. Without it the watch cannot measure speed, VMG or the route.
- Deleting a session in the iPhone app hides it there only; to delete the workout itself, use the Fitness or Health app.
- Deleting the apps removes everything they keep of their own. What is in Health stays until you delete it there.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct and delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent. Because your data stays on your devices and in Apple Health, you can exercise most of these rights directly there. We hold no copy of your data, so there is nothing for us to hand over or delete; but write to info@orkestraator.ee with any question and we will help. For data MET Norway or Apple received, you can also contact them directly.
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority — in Estonia the Data Protection Inspectorate (Andmekaitse Inspektsioon), or the authority where you live.
Children
The apps are not directed at children under 13 and do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes
This policy changes when the apps change what they do with data. The date at the top shows the latest version, and earlier versions stay in this website's public history on GitHub.
